We are all blessed in many ways. We have an obligation to pass these blessings on to others.
What a Great time to be a Tall Cedar!
Welcome to the rst ever special “Convention Issue” edition of the Cedar
Digest.
Enclosed you will nd all the information you need to get ready for
Convention 2022 in Ocean City, Maryland!
Whether you are a new Sapling or a seasoned Cedar, I hope that you will
consider attending this great annual event. Not only has it been three years
since our last Convention (anks COVID!), but this IS the annual business
session of the Supreme Forest. It is also a time to get acquainted, reacquainted
with fellow Cedars from all over and enjoy a time of Fun, Frolic, and
Fellowship together.
So you might be asking yourself, is it worth me as a “green” pyramid to even
show up? Yes, because YOU GET A VOICE! Per our Constitution, Any
member, in good standing of a Constituent Forest, shall be granted voice and
vote on all business brought before the Annual Meeting, except for the election of
Supreme Forest Ocers. Only members of the Supreme Forest will be eligible to
vote on the selection of Supreme Forest Ocers.” (Constitution Art. 5; A; 4.)
is event is for the whole family. I am sure the ladies will be getting out in
the town of Ocean City to sightsee and take in all the shops and we are planning fun events throughout the weekend
with our clowns and rangers to involve the kids.
At this convention we will also be celebrating our veterans in several ways. For it is because of them and their
sacrices that we have the freedoms we do as Tall Cedars.
Our closing dinner will be a red, white, and blue dinner with a themed band so feel free to wear your best outt
and show your support for our veterans and our country.
I know many are worried about the cost to attend due to the rise in prices of EVERYTHING! Unfortunately, the
Supreme Forest cannot control this, but we are doing the best we can to make it worth your while if you do plan to
attend.
Hope to see many of you in October! Until then, stay healthy and safe while going out and spreading Fun, Frolic,
and Fellowship in the name of Tall Cedars!
Cedarly,

It is truly a great day to be a Cedar. I have said it before, but I think it deserves to
be said again. When you joined your Blue Lodge, you joined a Fraternity but, when
you joined Tall Cedars, you became part of a family.
As with any family there are going to be great days and not so great days. ere are
days that we will incur growing pains and days of natural progression. is is all
part of the evolution of a having a rock-solid family on a rm foundation that will
support growth and can move into the 21 Century.
I have been blessed over the last two years to be a part of this Kingdom at the
Supreme Line level. I can truly say that this has been an eye-opening experience for
me and has been a great training period.
One thing that I can assure all our members of is this, my belief is that this is
your organization, and you have a right to attend any meeting anywhere. ere
will always be time for open constructive dialog between the Constituent Forest
members and the Supreme Forest. e key is open constructive dialog not redundant complaining with no proposal to
remedy the situation. I know there are things that have happened in our recent history and things in our not so recent
history that some members have adamantly disagreed with. I am going to ask that all those negative packages be left on the
dock. When the 2023 train pulls out of the station we need to have clear tracks and great weather to begin our journey.
ere are some areas of the organization that need a tweak to bring it along, some areas need a major overhaul, and
some areas need to be left alone. It will be through open productive discussions that together we will be able to leave our
organization in a better place than we found it.
As we move forward there is one thing that should be remembered “Embrace Tradition but Plan for the Future” is was
a Quote at the 2022 Mid-Winter by none other than our own JDSTC Jim Marion. is should be the Motto that governs
our actions as we set forth to revitalize our Tall Cedar Kingdom.
I would like to thank all those who have supported me over my journey thus far. It has truly been a humbling experience. I
can only hope that by the Grace of God and the assistance of the brethren I can be an asset to this great Organization.
e Grand Lodge of Wisconsin closes every meeting with the same dialog. I nd it only tting that I close this letter with
that dialog
“LOVE YA BROTHER”

I was born and raised in Valparaiso, Indiana although all my family roots are from
the Pittsburg, PA. area. I graduated from Portage High School in 1980. I attended
Purdue University Calumet for two years and then to Indiana Vocational Technical

I was employed for the last 27 years in the maintenance dept. As of January 2022,
I have ocially retired, and I am looking forward to enjoying what life will give
me without work getting in the way.
My masonic life started when I was raised to the sublime degree of a Master

Brian Van Scyoc, PGTC No. 145
Fraternal greetings Brothers! I am again running for Supreme Treasurer for
2023. If you go back and read my previous message you might note that
this year will be my 12th anniversary as a Mason and a Tall Cedar. I am very
gratefully for the opportunities I have had and the brothers I have met during
these years.
As I am writing this and trying not to repeat myself in this bio and boring you,
which is getting harder to do. e STC, Senior and Junior only have to do this
for 3 years, but the Scribe and Treasurer can potentially have 5 years of lling
this page and I hate to keep saying the same thing each time. is year I gured
I would focus on my interested outside of the Masonic fraternity and to let you
know that I do not just stare at numbers all day. My rst interest is history, and
if you know me and the area I grew up in (south central Pennsylvania), you
can probably guess that the area of history I study the most is the Civil War.
My family has members that fought for the Union and I have a rumor of a
family member that fought for the South and I am trying to conrm that rumor. Yes, I tend to side with the southerners
because of their commanders. If you want to waste a couple of hours at any Tall Cedar event I am attending, come over
and start talking about the Civil War. I belong to several history organizations and attend as many Civil War events
as possible and like to tour the battleelds. My other time is spent with youth as a member of American Youth Soccer
Organization (AYSO). I used to coach, but with the other time commitments I switched to being a referee (yes, one of
those zebras everyone hates) and instructing various management positions in the organization. I am currently serving
as the referee administrator for the south central Pennsylvania area, which encompasses 11 dierent regions. In addition
to overseeing the referees, I also train referees and update current referees on the changes in the laws of the game and
investigate any issues with referee conduct.
Finally, I am very active with my church. I serve as an usher and greeter during Sunday morning services. I am active
with the mens group as a past president and currently serve as fund raising and kitchen committee chairman. In addition
to those jobs, I am chairman of the Emergency Management committee, where we are looking for ways to make the
church safe and secure for the members.
I would appreciate your vote for Supreme Treasure at the convention and I hope to see you there and talk to youzzz-

where I served for two years. After my regions Supreme Director stepped down, I was appointed as acting Supreme Director
for one year. I was then elected to serve one term and am now seeking re-election for my second term.

SUPREME FOREST OF THE
TALL CEDARS OF LEBANON
OF NORTH AMERICA
Established
1902
DATE: June20,2022
TO: Constituent Forest Scribes
FROM: SDSTC David Manter
SUBJECT: 2023 Midwinter Conference
Hello Fellow Cedars, Ladies and Children,
Yes, we have included the Children in this greeting. ere will be special gift bags for the kids 12 and under. is entire
weekend will be spent as a Family aair. I would ask that you register as soon as possible so that we have enough gifts for
everyone.
Gerhard Poch has made special Pyramids for boys and I want to make sure we have enough. If you cant register early, please
send me an email and let me know how many boys and girls will be coming, as we will have something for the girls also.
is Mid-winter will also be a little dierent in that we are not be having a breakout session but we will be having a Town
Hall type meeting where we can share our ideas for the future of our Organization. e breakout sessions will become Re-
gional Schools of instruction. I will have a schedule of those events at Mid-Winter.
As with most Fraternities we are in a decline of membership. e ones that are showing signs of growth are the Fraternities
that are moving away from supporting national charities with huge administration budgets and working with local groups
and those with name recognition using mostly volunteers.
ere will be many hard decisions to be made over the next few years, some you will agree with some you will not. e most
important mission we have is to make sure the Cedar Kingdom is alive and well so our Childrens Children can enjoy the
same Fun, Frolic and Fellowship that we have had the privilege to enjoy because of the work of those that have gone before
us.
I would like to thank all those who have supported me throughout my journey in Cedarism. I have asked for help and
guidance throughout my Masonic Journey and have always received the help that I asked for. ere is always time to help
a Brother, I want to carry on that tradition and instill that in those who will lead at a later date. I want to thank all the Past
Supreme Tall Cedars who have always had time to mentor me and answer all my questions.
is is an extremely humbling experience to be able to serve our Fraternity at this level, once again thank you for all your
support. I will see you at Mid-Winter.

e History of e Tall Cedar Rose
e main objective of the Tall Cedars is
the ght against muscular dystrophy. One
of our fundraising projects is the Rose
Program. In 1979, the Rose Program
was instituted as a new fundraiser for
the Tall Cedars by Essex Forest No. 8.
“Roses Against Muscular Dystrophy!” was
accepted as a national program and oered
for a donation on street corners and at
special aairs of the Forests. is program
remains much the same today.
Over the years, the Rose has become the
signature of a Tall Cedar, and the Tall
Cedars’ purpose to nd a cure for muscular
dystrophy. We wear the rose as a reminder
of our commitment to be there for the kids
always.
So, be proud when you wear this rose and
join in the Fun, Frolic and Fellowship
of Tall Cedarism and the ght against
muscular dystrophy.
