SESSIONS: YEARS 7-8
TUE 14 MAY
TWISTED TALES
SALLY GARDNER
From the critically acclaimed Tinder, a modern retelling of the Hans
Christian Andersen classic, to Cinderella-inspired I, Coriander, an
historical fantasy set in 1600s London at the time of the Puritan
Commonwealth, award-winning author and illustrator Sally Gardner
continues to write stories that build on the richness of fairy tales
and win fans around the world. A winner of the Carnegie Medal,
the Nestle Gold Medal Award and the Costa Children’s Book Award,
Sally’s own story as a dyslexic who did not read or write until she was
14, is inspirational. She speaks about being a writer and the ways in
which her books are shaped by twisted tales of old.
ANTARCTIC STORIES
JOANNA GROCHOWICZ
Joanna Grochowicz has written two spell-binding books of narrative
non-fiction capturing the stories of our Antarctic heroes. Hailed as
“meticulously researched and compellingly told”, her debut novel
Into the White: Scott’s Antarctic Odyssey, was a finalist in the 2018 New
Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults. Her second,
Amundsen’s Way, vividly captures the brilliance and ruthlessness of
Roald Amundsen. Joanna shares tales of icy adventure, hardship and
resilience, celebrating the majesty of the great Continent as well as the
daring individuals who battled its elements.
DAWN RAID
PAULINE VAELUAGA SMITH
The novel Dawn Raid features the lively 1976 diary of 13-year-old Sofia
as she bears witness to the treatment of Pacific Island overstayers
during a dark era in this country’s history and is written by debut
author Pauline Vaeluaga Smith, winner of the Best First Book Award
in the 2018 New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults.
Pauline is a lecturer in Pasifika Studies at the University of Otago’s
College of Education and the organiser of Invercargill’s annual
Polyfest. She will share some of the true stories she gathered up whilst
bringing this piece of history to life as a novel, and discuss why the
story matters.
POEMS FOR PLEASURE
LUKE WRIGHT
Poet and performer Luke Wright has been lauded as “one of the
funniest and most brilliant poets of his generation” (Independent).
He writes poems for all ages, capturing the stories of funny and not
so funny things that happen to ordinary people. One of his most well-
known poems for children is Boden and the Library, about a boy who
goes to the ‘boring’ local library to cause trouble, only to discover that
libraries are treasure troves full of wonder that can set you free. Luke
will perform poetry and talk about what it takes to make a poem come
alive on and off the page.

SESSIONS: YEARS 9-13
WED 15 MAY, THU 16 MAY
AKALA PRESENTS: HIP-HOP SHAKESPEARE
AKALA
Akala is a BAFTA and MOBO award-winning hip-hop artist, social
entrepreneur and bestselling author, as well as the co-founder of The
Hip-Hop Shakespeare Company. In this interactive session which
includes spoken word and a student ‘call and response’, Akala explores
the social, cultural and linguistic parallels between the works of
William Shakespeare and contemporary hip-hop. The talk aims to
encourage young people to develop an alternate view of the arts and
ultimately themselves, by showing how the culture and language of
hip-hop and Shakespeare have the power to transgress race, class and
the iambic pentameter.
IN THE DARK SPACES
CALLY BLACK
In the Dark Spaces won its New Zealand born and Australian-based
author Cally Black (aka Bren MacDibble) the Ampersand Prize, the
Aurealis Award, a Queensland Literary Award and the New Zealand
Book Award for Young Adult Fiction. Its a genre-smashing hostage
drama which presents its readers with important philosophical
questions within the vividly drawn and immersive alien world Cally
has created. She takes us on a guided tour of the inspirations for In the
Dark Spaces and the ideas she is exploring in her writing which also
extends to books for younger readers.
DEAR EVAN HANSEN: THE NOVEL
VAL EMMICH
Dear Evan Hansen began its life as a Tony-award winning show
before being expanded and shaped into a novel by writer, singer/
songwriter and actor Val Emmich who is also the author of the novel
The Reminders, the creator of more than a dozen albums, and an actor
on shows including 30 Rock and The Big C. Dear Evan Hansen: The Novel
recounts the story of a lonely young man with social anxiety that
inhibits his ability to connect with other people and make friends.
Val will talk about the challenge of taking the musical into book form
and the important messages for young people the story carries, as well
as performing on stage.
Supported by the Embassy of the United States.
BOOKS FOR ALL
SALLY GARDNER
Costa and Carnegie Award winning novelist and illustrator
Sally Gardner believes passionately that YA readers should not be
patronised, but challenged and inspired. Her original style has
produced much loved titles including Maggot Moon, set in 1950s
Britain and exploring courage and friendship amongst the oppressive
forces of Motherland, and new book My Side of the Diamond, a
sci-fi thriller about love. Like her lead Maggot Moon character,
Sally is dyslexic and did not learn to read or write until she was
14 and continues to champion dyslexia through her own charity.
