understandthebroadsignificanceoftheresearchfindingsandupholdthehighestethical

management.Somepostdoctoralscholarswillalsobeengagedinteachingas

ImportanceofMentoringinPostdoctoralTraining
Seekingandreceivingeffectivementoring,separatefromresearchadvising,iscriticalfor
bothpersonalandprofessionaldevelopment.Agoodmentorbuildsarelationshipthat is
characterizedbyrespectandunderstanding. Attributesof agoodmentorincludebeing
approachable,availableandwillingtosharehis/herknowledge;listeningeffectively;
providingencouragementandconstruc tivecriticism;andofferingexpertiseand gu idance .
FosterBreadthandFle xibilityinCareerChoices
Postdoctoralappointeesmusthavetrainingexperiencesofsufficientbreadthto ensure
thattheyarepreparedtopursueawiderangeofprofessionalcareeroptions.Effective
andregularcareerguidanceisessentialandcanbeprovidedbythementorandthe
institution.
Core Tenets of Postdoctoral Training

AttheFloridaStateUniversity,postdoctoralfellowsaredefinedasmentoredtraineeswherethe
appointmentisviewedaspreparatoryforthetraineeʹscareer.Theappointmentinvolvessubstantial
mentoredtraininginafieldrelevanttothetraineeʹscareerpath,includingresearch,scholarship,or
teaching.Theappointeeworksunderthementorshipofafacultymember. Whenappropriateandwith
theapprovaloftheadvisor,theappointeeisencouragedtopublishresearchorscholarshipresultsduring
theperiodoftheappointment. Allappointmentswillbeclassifiedasapostdocundertheemployeeclass
inOMNI.
Asamentoredtrainee,individualsshouldreceiveappointmentswithaspecificstartdateandinitial
duration.AppointeesmustbeawardedaPh.D.orequivalentdoctorate(e.g.,Sc.D.orM.D.)inan
appropriatefieldwithin5yearspriortoappointment.Exceptionscanbemadeonani ndividualbasis
whenjustifiableandaccompaniedbysupportingdocumentswithpriorapprovalfromtheOfficeof
PostdoctoralAffairs.Further,individualsmaynotholdanappointmentasapostdoctoralscholarfor
longerthanfouryears.Underspecialcircumstancesasapprovedinadvancebytheprovost,postdoc
appointmentsmayberenewedforanadditionalyearforamaximumoffiveyearstotal.Attheendofthe
trai ni ngper iod,itisexpectedthatthepostdocwillmoveintoanonpos tdoctoral positioneitheratFSUor
elsewhere.Timetakenforprior,nonpostdoctoraltrai ni ng or employmentdoesnotcounttowardthis
fouryearlimit.Thedurationofyourappointmentisatthediscretionofyourdepartment,programor
otherappointingunit,andisbasedonyourscientificprogressandtheregulationsoutlinedbyyourfunding
sponsor,ifapplicable.

typicallypaidbyFSUoragrantadministeredbyFSU.Thescholarhasaccesstofacultyinsurance
planoptions,BencorRetirementplan,SeminoleSavings,andFloridaprepaidtuitionplans.
Salary and Benefits

PostdoctoralScholarsarepaidassalariedemployees,regardlessofthefundingsource,
forprovidingaservice.Thisgenerallyoccurswhentheindividual’strainingis
accomplishedthroughmeetingaworkobligationandprovidingservicetoa
sponsoredcontract.Thismay
alsooccurthroughcommitmentofinstructionalservices
totheinstitution.Theappointments
ofsuchindividualswillsho wanappropriate
percentageofeffortanda “salarypayment.”

PostdoctoralCourtesyAppointment

anOPS
appointeewhoisanonfacultyvis itorat FSU.ThistypeofscholarisnotpaidbyFSU
butratherthescholarʹshomecountry,institution,orotherprogram.Thisclassificationalso
comprisesscholarsappointedonNIHtraininggrants.Thescholarmayhaveaccesstothe
wellnesscenterstudentinsuranceplans
dependinguponfundingsourceforposition,if
andasrequiredbythestateofFlorida.AllPostdoctoralCourtesyAppointmentsshould
alsobeguidedbyimportantpoliciesreferencedintheʺ UnpaidVisitingScholarResearcher
Policyʺthatpertaintotheirclassificationas
postdocs.
PostdoctoralCourtesyAppointeesaregenerallysupportedbyastipend,regardlessof
thefundingsource,andeffortissolelydevotedtoresearchtrainingactivity.Such
stipendsareusuallysupportedbyaninstitutionalorindividualfederaltraininggrant
orhomecountry.
Payrolltaxesnorretirementcontributionsarenotwithheldfrom
monthlycompensation,but
incomemaybesubjecttostateandfederaltaxes.
Appointeesshouldrefertotaxexpertsto
determin e theirliabilitytopaytaxes.
Monthly Compensation
TheOfficeofPostdoctoralAffairsandthePostdoctoralAdvisoryBoard,inconjunctionwiththe
Provost’sOffice,requireaminimumannualcompensationlevelforallpostdoctoralscholarsof
$47,658.Inorderforanemployeetobeexemptfromovertimepayforallworkperformedover40
hoursperweek,theymustearn$913perweek.StartingAugust1,2016,allextramuralproposals
submittedfrom FSUwillbedirectedtousethenewbaserate.Ifapostdoctoralscholariscurrently
supportedbytheirownNIHgrantoraninstitutionaltraininggrant,therateshaveincreasedtomeet
theFLSAminimum.Supplementscanbe
requestedtoobtaintherateincreasebycont actingthe
programofficerofthesupportedinstitute.
Termination
Thereisascholarsandfellowsseparationguidelinethatshouldbefollowedincludingan
EmployeeSeparationChecklistregardlessofhowtheemploymenthascometoanend(endof
plannedtrainingorearlytermination).Earlyterminationcanoccurintheeventthatthe
postdoctoralscholarorthementorfailtomeettheirobligationsasdescribedinthehiringcompact.

Health Insurance
Allpostdoctoralfellowsarerequiredtoenrollthemselvesandtheirdependentsinoneofanumberof
grouphealthandprescriptiondruginsuranceplans.Theplansandservicesavailable,aswellastheco
payrates,mayvaryfromyeartoyearsoitisimportant toreadthroughwhatisofferedbefore
enrolling.Therearestandardplans,healthmaintenanceorganization(HMO)plans,highdeductible
healthplans(HDHP),andpreferredproviderorganization(PPO)plansfromwhichtoselect.Ifyouare
aninternationalscholar,yourVISAmayrestrictthetypeof planyouareeligibletoobtain.
Insuranceplansofferingcoveragefordentalandvisioncarealsoareavailabletoallpostdoctoral
fellows.
Thereareadditionalbenefitssuchaslifeinsurance;hospital,cancer,shorttermdisability,and
