Admission Requirements for Students Educated in
Canada
Please note: These are minimum requirements intended to give a general sense of admissibility to Iowa
State University (ISU). An official admission decision will be made upon receipt of a completed
application with all required supporting documents and fees.
English Proficiency

Freshman Applicants
Minimum High School Course Preparation
4 years of native language
3 years of mathematics (including beginning algebra, geometry and advanced algebra)
3 years of science (including 2 years of courses which emphasize elements of biology, chemistry, or physics)
2 years of social studies [3 years for applicants to our College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS)]
Applicants to majors in the LAS and Engineering colleges must have 2 years of a single foreign
language (English may be used if it is not the native language).
Minimum Academic Requirements
A minimum equivalent GPA of B / 3.0 on a 4.0 scale:
Alberta: 65% achieving the High School Diploma / Diplôme d’études Secondaires
British Columbia: 73% achieving the Secondary School Graduation Diploma / Diplôme de fin
d’études Secondaires
Manitoba: 70% achieving the High School Diploma / Diplôme d’Études Secondaires
New Brunswick: 73% achieving the High School Diploma / Diplôme d’Fin d’Études
Newfoundland and Labrador: 70% achieving the High School Graduation Certificate or Diploma
Northwest Territories: 70% achieving the High School Graduation Diploma & School Leaving
Certificate
Nova Scotia: 70% achieving the High School Graduation Diploma
Nunavut: 65% achieving the High School Diploma
Ontario: 70% achieving the Secondary School Diploma / Diplôme d’Études Secondaires
Prince Edward Island: 70% achieving the Senior High School Graduation Certificate
Quebec: 70% achieving the Pre-University Grade 12 Certificate
Saskatchewan: 70% achieving the Secondary School Diploma
Yukon: 73% achieving the Certificate of Graduation
An admission decision may be made based on transcripts for the 3 years before the final year of high
school along with other required supporting documents.
Applicants should submit final official transcripts confirming high school completion before being
allowed to enroll at ISU.
Standardized Admission Testing: ACT/SAT
ISU is “test optional. The ACT/SAT is not required for admission to ISU for international applicants.
Applicants may choose whether or not to submit ACT/SAT scores if they have them. Submitted
scores may be used by ISU for admissions purposes, course placement and scholarship decisions.
Transfer Applicants
Minimum Academic Requirements
A minimum equivalent GPA of C+ on a scale of A to F or 2.25 on a 4.0 scale for all transferable
courses. If there are less than 24 transferable credits, high school transcripts will also be required,
and ACT/SAT scores may be considered if available.
Complete and comprehensive official academic records are required. Syllabi for all transferable
courses are required for the transfer credit evaluation process. This process will determine the
number of transferable courses/credits that will be applied towards the student’s major at ISU.
Academic records and syllabi must be issued by the institution, and must either be issued in English,
or issued in the language of instruction and include a certified English translation.
