A Resolution Regarding Expanding the Course Credit that the University of Georgia
Awards for Passage of Various International Baccalaureate (IB) Examinations

WHEREAS, International Baccalaureate programs “give high school students an opportunity to
pursue college-level studies while still in high school;

” and,
WHEREAS, “The IB program has…limited acceptance within the U.S. but is growing in
popularity,

” according to the United States Department of State; and,
WHEREAS, the University of Georgia does not award credit for the passage of a variety of IB
examinations that substantially correspond to courses at UGA, and for which many of its peer
institutions award credit (see appendix); and,
WHEREAS, if UGA awards credit for the passage of more IB classes, students would not have
to repeat courses they have already taken, reducing costs

and freeing students to take other
courses; and,
WHEREAS, the addition of more IB course credit may attract more IB students to UGA; and,

WHEREAS, UGA’s existing IB credit policies

already award credit for passage of a Standard
Level (SL) exam with a score of 5-7 or a Higher Level (HL) exam with a score of 4-7; and,
WHEREAS, UGA’s existing IB credit policies

award credit for multiple classes in some cases,
especially for a high score on an HL exam; and,
WHEREAS, According to UGA’s Advanced Placement (AP) credit policies,

several AP exams
that correspond to IB exams receive credit for a passing score; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the 31
st
administration of the Student Government
Association, on behalf of the student body, recommends that the University of Georgia reassess
how course credit for the passage of IB exams is awarded.

IB Business Management

Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Arizona, Indiana, Maryland, NC State, Missouri, UC Davis, Purdue,
Stony Brook, Florida, Penn State, Texas, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Illinois, Minnesota, and Virginia
award credit for passage of the IB Business Management exam with certain scores. At UGA, IB
Business Management is comparable to MARK 3000 (Principles of Marketing) and MGMT
3000 (Principles of Management). The research suggests a comparable award at UGA would be
either MARK 3000 or MGMT 3000 credit for passage of the SL Business Management exam
with a score of 5-7 or the HL exam with a score of 4-5, and both MARK 3000 and MGMT 3000
credit for passage of the HL exam with a score of 6-7.
IB Dance

Virginia Tech, Indiana, Maryland, UC Davis, Purdue, Stony Brook, UC Berkeley, UCLA,
Illinois, and Michigan award credit for the passage of the IB Dance exam with certain scores. At
UGA, IB Dance is comparable to DANC 2010 (Dance Appreciation). The research suggests a
comparable award at UGA would be DANC 2010 credit for the passage of the SL Dance exam
with a score of 5-7 or the HL exam with a score of 4-7.

Design). The research suggests a comparable award at UGA would be ENGR 1120 credit for the
passage of the SL Design Technology exam with a score of 5-7 or the HL exam with a score of
4-7.
IB Economics

Virginia Tech, Michigan State, Arizona, Iowa, Indiana, Maryland, NC State, Ohio State, UC
Davis, Florida, Penn State, Texas, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Virginia,
and Wisconsin award credit for both macroeconomics and microeconomics for passage of the IB
Economics exam with certain scores. At UGA, IB Economics is comparable to ECON 2105
(Principles of Macroeconomics) and ECON 2106 (Principles of Macroeconomics), and UGA
awards credit for both for passage of the corresponding AP exams, but UGA only awards credit
for one of these courses but not both for the passage of the IB exam. The research suggests a
comparable award at UGA would be both ECON 2105 and ECON 2106 credit for the passage of
the HL Economics exam with a score of 6-7.
IB Environmental Systems and Societies

Virginia Tech, Iowa State, Arizona, Maryland, Missouri, Purdue, Florida, Texas, Illinois, and
Virginia award credit for passage of the IB Environmental Systems and Societies exam with
certain scores. At UGA, IB Environmental Systems and Societies is comparable to ECOL 1000-
1000L (Ecological Basis of Environmental Issues), and UGA awards credit for passage of the
comparable AP Environmental Science exam. The research suggests a comparable award at
UGA would be ECOL 1000-1000L credit for the passage of the SL Environmental Systems and
Societies exam with a score of 5-7.
IB Global Politics

IB Global Politics was first available for testing in 2017,

so few of UGA’s peer schools offer
information about the course. However, at UGA, IB Global Politics is comparable to INTL 1100
(Introduction to Global Issues), and UGA awards credit for the passage of the comparable AP
Comparative Government and Politics exam. The research suggests a comparable award at UGA
would be INTL 1100 credit for the passage of the SL Global Politics exam with a score of 5-7 or
the HL exam with a score of 4-7.

Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue, Michigan, and Minnesota award credit up to Calculus II,
and all of these schools plus Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Iowa State, Arizona, Iowa, Maryland, NC
State, Missouri, UC Davis, Florida, Penn State, Texas, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Illinois, Virginia,
and Wisconsin award credit up to Calculus I, for the passage of the IB Mathematics exam with
certain scores. At UGA, depending on the level of the IB course and performance on the exam,
IB Mathematics is comparable to courses up to MATH 2260 (Calculus II), and UGA awards
credit up to MATH 2260 for passage, depending on the level of performance, of the comparable
AP Calculus BC exam, but UGA only awards credit up to MATH 1113 (Precalculus) for passage
of the IB exam. The research suggests a comparable award at UGA would be up to MATH 1113
for the passage of the SL Mathematics exam with a score of 5, up to MATH 2250 for the passage
of the SL exam with a score of 6-7 or the HL exam with a score of 4-5, and up to MATH 2260
for the passage of the HL exam with a score of 6-7.
IB Philosophy

IB Social and Cultural Anthropology

passage of the SL Social and Cultural Anthropology exam with a score of 5-7 or the HL exam

passage of the SL Theatre exam with a score of 5-7 or the HL exam with a score of 4-7.
IB Theory of Knowledge

course. At UGA, Theory of Knowledge is comparable to PHIL 2010 (Introduction to
Philosophy). The research suggests a comparable award at UGA would be PHIL 2010 credit for
passage of the Theory of Knowledge course with a grade of A-C.
IB World Religions

Virginia Tech, Arizona, Maryland, Missouri, Purdue, Penn State, and Illinois award credit for
passage of the IB World Religions exam with certain scores. While there is no directly
comparable course at UGA, IB World Religions still represents college-level work. The research
suggests a comparable award at UGA would be a 1000-level religion elective credit for the
passage of the SL World Religions exam with a score of 5-7.
